I don't want to use the word outdated to explain what this book is like. I'd rather use the word old fashioned because it's the same math we had when we were kids, and I think my math skills turned out okay. I am a math teacher after all. I've used this as our main text book in the classroom for the first time this year. Our students loved this book because they felt it was easier to understand than the common core book we were using. Case in point, they were able to do their homework on their own with this book, as opposed to needing extra help when we did the common core stuff.In some cases tho, I'll admit that this book was below grade level. The explanations and examples are a lot gentler than the ones I've seen in those common core books. When you're first learning a concept, you shouldn't start out with incredibly hard examples, and teach them ten different ways to solve a problem because that confuses students and causes them to hate math. Like in this book, examples should start out gently until you've mastered the concepts. What I would like to see though are more practice problems. The extra problems also should be a little more "meaty" than the ones that are found in the book. This can be done very easily on the Mastering Essentials website (hint hint Mr. Fisher).I believe you will find that this book is pretty good, but only if you want to take the express train to algebra. Like an express train bypasses many stations and gets you to the same destination much faster, this is an essentials book. It does not cover many of the obscure topics and tricky word problems that are found on the common core state exams. The bulk of which are not needed in order to learn higher math. For that reason, if your intent is to get your child ready for the common core exam, you will need to supplement this book with a common core aligned math book. On the other hand, if your intent is for your child to actually learn the fundamentals and like math, and not just study to the test, then you should buy this book. Finally, I like the fact that this book has videos that go along with each lesson. And I also love the price!Oh, and one last thing. Although this book says middle and high school, IMHO this book is more for 6th and 7th graders. Once they finish this one, they should be ready for the No Nonsense Algebra book. The only way I'd recommend this be used in high school is as a remedial review for those students who took common core math and didn't learn the basics.

Ignore all of the reviews that say you need to look up concepts, or there are no instructions!! Free, online videos are included for every lesson, you just need to understand how to use the book correctly! Make sure to read the first several pages of the workbook BEFORE you try to actually use it or teach it.We homeschool and this is the best math book we have used. There are daily drills, followed by daily review and, finally, a few problems covering new material. The format is simple and follows a very clear progression. The videos cover each new concept and the author has you follow along and write down concepts and problems. Mr. Fisher speaks and instructs in an easy to understand, slow-paced way. You can pause and go back if you don't understand. This book is not only appropriate for the middle grades, but also for anyone who needs to brush up on their basic skills (adults included). There are no cutesy or child-like illustrations in the book and the videos are taught as if he is speaking to an adult, not condescending at all. Perfect for my 7th grader! I wish I had found this series earlier. We will definitely be purchasing his math books for the next several years!

My son has ADHD as well as a pretty serious math anxiety that he developed thanks to his teacher in the public school he attended berating and belittling him in front of the class when he couldn't keep up. I have since started homeschooling him using this book and he is doing very well.

I wrote to the author to get his opinion on what books I should purchase to get ready for a math placement test. He wrote back very promptly with advice and words of encouragement. I'll probably purchase a few more of his books when I finish this one!

I bought this book thinking it was actually "middle school/high school" level of math. Unfortunately, there is a lot missing from this book. It is mostly addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The level I would say is more fourth/fifth grade, at least according to the curriculum in our county in South Florida. If you want anything related to the following, this is not the book for you. It DOES NOT HAVE: ratios, proportions, percents, three-dimensional geometry, coordinate plane and functions, types of numbers (whole vs. natural vs. integers, etc), algebra, etc. {And this is just the middle school math stuff.}

I was forced back to Arizona, where I NEVER lived, I spent 2 months there with the baby trying to do the right thing and let the father and paternal grandparents visit with the child because the grandparents of my son wanted him, they had a DNA test done on my son without my permission and then served me with papers.I had no where to live, no friends or family in Phoenix and my savings was almost gone.I was angry and emotional and the court date was coming up fast and not an ounce of discovery had been done by my attorney. I happened across Guy Whites book, read it in an hour, then emailed him and met with him the next day because as it turns out he happened to live in the Phoenix area.I hired him as my child custody consultant form my case.I told him the good and bad about me and the cicumstances in the case so he could give me the best advice possible for my situation. Guy helped me to analyze the case and move the "chess pieces" around to show the judge this should be labeled a grandparents case becuase my attorney was just not listening to me and wasn't getting it done.Guy helped me replace fear with knowledge and helped me learn how to manage my attorneys and my case. He taught me the value of hiring a child custody consultant, and not being afraid to follow his advice and instructions. We found out that 6 out of 6 times my son was going for visitation with his father, he was being left with grandparents and he is a 41 year old man who STILL live at home.Guy would guide me on how to communicate in an efficient and effective way with my attorneys to manage my case and use the evidence we collected to paint a picture of the father and show that his lifestyle was unsuitable to raise a child, and it was the grandparents who had the vested interest in the child, not the father. Guy taught me how to label this for the judge to recognize it was a grandparents case. I could not have done this without Guy.I received the judgment that I could relocate back to California with my son with primary physical custody. Guy taught me how to replace fear with knowledge and even though I came to him late in the game, I followed his guidelines and his strategies that he mapped out for me during our consultations and with his guidance he changed the course of my sons life.I paid Guy all I could afford and between him, private investigator fees, and attorneys fees my savings is gone, I lost house but I live close to friends and family and I have my son.Without Guy as my child custody consultant, and using the book as a roadmap to managing my case, the outlook for the future with my son would be completely different.To this day, the father still has not paid a dime in child support and my son is 17 months old.Because I am just getting back on my feet, Guy continues to check in with me and offer any advice he can to help me.This book and Guy Whites years of knowledge turned my case around when I had no where else to go.The private investigator that I hired purchased 20 of his books and hands it out to their clients as a guide.If there are negative reviews on Guys book one can only assume that someone didn't follow the advice Guy offers, and lost their case.His book is not to tell you now great lawyers are, or how great psychologist are.It's practical, logical, direct advice and compared to the money we have all paid in attorneys fees, this book is worth paying 10 times as much as it costs, and his consulting skills I cannot even put a price on.I am so thankful to Guy.Please feel free to contact me. I a real person with a real story and I owe it all to Guy White and the strategies contained in his book and taking the chance on hiring him as my child custody consultant.

Best book i have read on custody so far without being too negative or too over whelming or lacking details. this is helpful, but be prepared to wonder if your lawyer is doing enough hadn't want to do a lot more to help your case and to encourage your lawyer to do more.

Amazing! I wondered how anyone could give this book a negative review but now I think I might have figured it out. What if the people who gave negative reviews are bitter parents who "lost" their custody cases against their exes who got help from the author of this book?

I wish I had this book 8yrs ago when I filed for divorce. Guy is right, your case is never over and custody is just a word. You have to win with evidence and Guy tells you how to go about doing that. Guy writes from experience, which I have found in my own case, to be more valuable than a degree on paper. He is detailed and give specifics (names changed to hide identity obviously) on cases. He is a no nonsense, black and white kind of writer in his descriptions of what and whom he worked with. I would recommend this book to anyone in any stage of their divorce and/or custody battle. For me, it's brought some closure on certain issues (like CPS being incompetent and unwilling to really get to the truth) but it's also given me hope that all is never lost. There's always a fighting chance to protect our kids in a divorce/custody battle...how you go about it will be the deciding factor.

The author of this book is very passionate about the subject material and very experienced in the custody arena. After reading the book, I still needed more specific information on my particular case so I retained Guy White to consult with me on strategies that would help my particular case. Every penny was worth it's weight in gold! Guy spent countless hours listening to my drama and giving me tangible advice. I would use the advice and then report back to him on what the court appointed psychologist concluded, etc. He would come back with me tactics and advice. We ended up winning the case and I believe a lot of his consulting information turned the tide. Within a few phone calls he knew all of the names and people and their stories involved in my case....my Attorney barely even knew anyone's name. The love and passion for this subject really comes across and he is right on when it comes to dealing with Attorneys and Judges.I was attempting to prove that my ex was not the best parent. Guy told me to lay off that and focus on some other issues otherwise the Judge would have sympathy for him and see me as the evil witch. This was very true as was much of the other advice he gave me, and I began to see the Judge siding with my ex....so I took Guy's advice and it worked, it turned the Judge from siding with him to agreeing that I had the best interest of the child at heart. So glad I retained him to work on my case....he is very practical, down to earth and pulls no punches....tells it like it is.

WELCOME TO HAVANNA!!! OMG what a book!!! Recipes are clear and concise and easy to follow. First thing I made was the "Rabo Encendido" (Oxtail Stew) and it was out of this world wonderful! Being new to Cuban cuisine, I'm going to be an expert in no time!! Absolutely delighted by this book.

I started checking this book out of the library over 20 yrs ago. I first tried the Arroz Blanco perfect white rice, and let me tell you what it is.! No matter if you are cooking one cup of rice or 12 cups of rice this recipe has been my go-to method ever since I first picked up this book. Prior to checking this book out from the library I could not make rice to save my life. I remember periodically I would keep going back to the library to take the book out again and again for various other recipes I remember standing in the library and making photocopies of certain recipes. Recently someone was telling me they are very challenged with making rice so I was explaining the method that I used and they thought I was crazy. It reminded me of this cookbook so decided to purchase my own copy I don't know what took me so long because there are so many amazing recipes in this book! My daughter recently tried the rice recipe and she was shocked at how fluffy the rice came out and how perfectly cooked it was. My mother now also only Cooks rice the way this book taught me to. I highly recommend you get this book

Cubans are experts at turning lower-cost cuts of meat into fabulous dishes. With that being said, the recipes are not terribly complex, do not require ingredients you've never heard of, and once you have your kitchen basically stocked, you will be able to wow your family with the techniques and flavors lavished in this book. Don't go for flair, go for substance. This book has substance. Also, as an aside, a wonderful history on pre-Castro Cuba precedes every section of recipes.

This is the textbook for cooking Cuban food if you ask my family (all Cuban immigrants). And growing up on this food, I can't disagree. It is amazing. I buy copies of this book for anyone who says they want to learn to cook Cuban food. There are some modern innovations that make some of these recipes easier though. So pro-tip: For Ropa Vieja, cook the meat in a pressure cooker or slow cooker if you don't want to spend hours shredding the beef shoulder by hand

I've tried a couple Cuban cookbooks, and this is hands down my favorite. It's the most authentic cookbook I've encountered; the closest to the way my mother and grandmother cook. Not only are the recipes great, but I love the family stories and the background that's provided for when one might actually have encountered the various dishes in a Cuban household, which ones were everyday dishes, which were things you only saw during the holidays or at parties, etc. I love this cookbook so much, over the years I've purchased one for myself as well as many other copies for friends.

As a cook myself, I can tell you that this is by far the best Cuban food recipe cook book ever written, it has all the authentic classical dishes that we Cubans grew up with, and many other dishes, desserts and drinks , and along the way , it also has a lot of interesting history of the pre Castro era, when Cuba was a wonderful paradise to live in. Having a dear friend who is from Cuba, we are treated to wonderful meals from his home land whenever he invites us for dinner. He doesn't cook with recipes and when we query him about how he put together such delicious empanadas or cuban roast pork, he waves his hand and says "I never measure. I go by instinct!"Well his instinct is phenomenal...mine, not so much. When I constantly bemoaned the fact that I could never duplicate his delicious culinary creations, he surprised me one Christmas with this cookbook. He said he perused countless Cuban cookbooks out on the market to find the one he wanted for me and Memories of a Cuban Kitchen invoked the recipes and ingredients he remembered from his childhood.The recipes are easy to follow and the cookbook is organized very nicely. There is also a glossary of terms that is very helpful. The ingredients you can find in any food store and after being introduced to Mojo, it is now a staple in my pantry. The recipes use lots of garlic which my friend always says to me..."if the recipe calls for four cloves, you put in eight!!" We love garlic and I think it is what makes the Cuban dishes so delicious. I always thought that Cuban food was spicy, but it is not. It is very flavorful, but not necessarily spicy hot.Mom's Black Beans are to die for as are the Cuban Pork Chops. The Cuban sandwiches are all mouthwatering wonderful and the fillings for the tea sandwiches are amazing. I made the sandwiches for a church brunch and everyone was very impressed. The rice pudding is a fabulous dessert for the culmination of your Cuban feast.This cookbook is one to have on the shelf to pull out when you want to savor some outstanding comfort food from Cuba.

Book bought "used in GOOD condition". I was pleasantly surprised upon opening the package to find a book in almost brand new condition. Being a cookbook, I expected quite a bit of wear & tear, even if listed a good condition.Living in south Florida for 50 years, I have been exposed to authentic Cuban food, this cookbook contains all the favorites you'd expect and then some. Best book on Cuban food I've found.

Craig Martin is beyond words. This text is not only a critical introduction to the study of Religion, but also to society and living life. It explains how our systems work and how they are reinforced. It made me think deeply and be able to articulately understand the way in which social norms are constructed and reified as well as authority, the habitus, and several other ideas. This book is PHENOMENAL. I already bought 5 copies to share with others. MUST READ

Very interesting approach

The book had a lot of helpful information in it but, the Kindle Edition had terrible formatting issues. Which made it hard to read some parts in the book.

A very good summary introduction to religion. It allows for a taste of the study and a direction for study.

Martin's arguments tend to only be as strong as his examples. Much of the book is plagued by ill thought out examples that Martin fails to fully understand the implications of, particularly when attempting to explore issues of gender and sex as examples of his concepts. Conversely, his final chapter shows Martin at his best, as the book "In His Steps" provides Martin with a clear example to work with that requires little mental acrobatics to apply Martin's categories to. Furthermore, "In His Steps" works for Martin because criticizing it lacks the danger of marginalizing already marginalized peoples like Martin's gender examples do, or of reinforcing Western views of religion and culture, as Martin nearly does when trying to use Navajo rituals as examples of Structure. This book is good for those with a pre-existing bias in favor of religion in terms of piercing those biases, but should not be taken at face value by anyone lacking a foundation in the field or outside information.

This author has really great ideas, but the style is plodding and much too detailed. I was initially excited about his ideas but found that this book doesn't fit my needs for an Intro to Religious Studies text.

When one reads a book on comparative religion there are a few things they might expect. The first is an interesting read that is written in such a manner that you have trouble putting it down. In this regard, Martin succeeds perfectly. His book is written in such a way that it sucks you in and you've read it all in the space of roughly a day and aren't sure quite how that happened. So a point to this book there. Another thing you might expect is critical thinking in regards to the topics at hand. Martin certainly rises to the challenge, but I feel he falls short. He often starts looking at something in a novel and critical way, and then rapidly switches to another example that seems only loosely connected. It was as if he wanted to look at all the major faiths of the world, but then decided to only give them a cursory glance and assume he was an expert. Definitely looses points here, he may be clear about what he believes, but he is, in my opinion, bad at his follow through and bad at backing up his claims. Finally, you might (and should) expect that, regardless of personal beliefs, the author and text would, at least, be respectful of and, hopefully, be reverent of the faiths and cultures which are being investigated. As any good ethnographer knows, it is crucial to remain in an objective standpoint while also actively participating and respect is paramount. Martin, however, completely falls apart here. The entire book uses language and sentence structures that imply, very strongly, that no matter what one believes, this belief is flawed and foolish. The author comes off as arrogant and very clearly an atheist who only performed and gathered what little research they did in order to pick specific points to scoff at and belittle. I'm not a particularly religious person and various people in my class are agnostic or atheistic and we all found his oversimplification, glossing over of important and minute details, and word choice to be offensive and insensitive to those of faith. On this he loses almost all remaining points. If it weren't for this aspect I would give his book a 3 star review, it was an easy read that was clearly laid out, but it was a little shallow for my tastes in some places, that is forgivable; his complete and utter disrespect as well as his disregard for the subtle intricacies of various faiths, however, is not only unacceptable but also invalidating of his argument. For this reason, I can only give him two stars at best. It's not a bad read, but it is frustrating at points and, while supposedly scholarly, feels more like a fluff piece you would read on a beach than a critical analysis of religion from multiple perspectives.
