#40,103 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Know what you’re signing up for before you buy this, I recommend actually taking a swing at that sample. Those expecting this to be like any other book will be surprised.First, the writing is terrible. It feels like the original version, which I expect was Chinese, went through Google Translate. You aren’t going to be reading elegant prose. You’re reading a mess of mis-used adjectives, repetitive descriptions, botched idioms, and the like. Characters don’t “sense” something or “feel it in their gut”. Instead, they “feel in their hearts”, even for minor things. Most things are excessively wordy, and a woman’s breasts are repeatedly referred to either as “twin peaks” or “flatlands”On that topic, the description of the women is rather off-putting. I expect this is cultural, but it’s pretty uncomfortable. Stories in this vein (wuxia, maybe a bit of xianxia) tend to include some sort of harem fantasy subplot. It hasn’t gotten there yet as of the end of book two, but it’s trending that way. Women see a man with confidence or money and immediately start snuggling up to them. Attractive women are mentioned at length as the eyes of all men follow them, other women are largely disregarded. It’s kinda gross, but so far I haven’t had too much trouble just skimming those parts. It’s very wordy. For books that aren’t that long, they sure do spend a lot of time overexplaining things. Comparisons to how a standard level x person would do against a given enemy are constant, and then of course the main character obliterates the thing at a lower level. I get that we’re advertising his mastery of the game, but it’s annoying. Similarly, there’s constant over-analyzation of other players’ equipment. Finally, random bystanders will occasionally weigh in on an issue to give perspective. These are never concise. Look forward to a two page monologue from unnamed individuals in the crowd that provide unholy amounts of exposition.I take issue with some of the game logic. Overall, it seems the author put a reasonable amount of thought into game mechanics and such, but the main character gets lucky too often and I have trouble with the scale. Right now everything is low level, a level five would obliterate a level three. But then our MC destroys something six levels higher than he is, and he does it constantly. Meanwhile individual level ups don’t seem to actually influence power all that directly. Plus I’m just not sure the framework is in place to allow for this guy hitting the max level, 200. Maybe that’s just me. It’s not a huge deal, just an annoyance.Lastly, the main character doesn’t seem to have much of a personality. I don’t dislike him, I just don’t really care about him. This hasn’t been a huge issue for me, but it’s of note.

I'll start by saying I've read all the currently translated chapters. Far more than all the published books (as of 8/4/18).The main character is a good guy and is well developed as far as the author allows. The story itself is excellent and an enjoyable read. I would recommended reading the book. So why only 3 stars? The biggest issue is the author writing on a 1:5 basis. There is roughly one chapter of story for every 5 chapters of overly detailed explanations. Seriously, I think the author could take 5 chapters just to describe dirt. Tedious beyond belief. The other glaring issue, but common among these type of novels is the utter and complete lack of social development. We get no real feel for the emotional depth of the MC. The author points out how beautiful the women are, so the MC is obviously aware, but to this point he hasn't even held a girl's hand. It leaves you feeling like it's very two dimensional. Friendships and relationships are not a part of this book.If you can skim through the tedious explanations, this book still rates reading.I do have an issue with another reviewer who is giving misinformation. The women in this book are generally shown as competent, intelligent, strong fighters, and in no way are they demeaned. This reviewer also claims he can see a harem coming. Don't listen to him unless he has a crystal ball. It hasn't happened yet after roughly 11 books of reading and the MC hasn't even held a girl's hand. This reviewer is doing everyone a disservice by making things up due to his own imaginings. As for his other complaint, he doesn't like the way Chinese people express themselves. He complains about their idioms and way of speaking, blaming it on translation.Sorry for the last paragraph. But I felt someone should point out how wrong that information was.

As you can surmise from the headline I originally found RSSG on the website Gravity Tales. After reading several other stories with similar or the same premise I found that this one was the best by far. I ended up binge reading all 50 of the chapters that had been translated at that point & I even started looking forward to the daily new chapter. I watched as RSSG slowly rose through the ranks going from not even being on the top 10 GT monthly ranking list to #3 & even getting this eBook, which I purchased to show my support. Even this review, I have had to rewrite this 4 times due to technical issues. I almost gave up but I felt compelled to complete it because I've enjoyed RSSG so much. My thanks to the author & their editor also to the translator & their editor. Thank you for all or your hard work & I look forward to future chapters.

Cons: A lot of the game mechanics and cool down timers happen off the page only making an appearance in the book to conveniently explain, after the fact, how the main character completed some goal.Pros: A small but nonetheless existent glossary is in the back of the book with quick reference links for easy use placed as necessary throughout the book. Next, the adventures feel authentic and believable, the author came up with a really good reason for his main characters talents and abilities. Also, the main character is mature in various situations, coming up with elegant solutions to them all the while.

Nicely written.

The quality of the picture cover wasn’t what I expected.

Prayers come from her experience in her chosen profession. An inspiration to all nurses who struggle in their work. Would recommend it to all doctors and nurses.

Excellent gift for a caregiver/nurse and so reasonably priced. . . almost cheaper than a greeting card.

A great way to start a shift!!

The Star Spangled Buddhist: Zen, Tibetan, and Soka Gakkai Buddhism and the Quest for Enlightenment in America

Review

“Ourvan offers a succinct but illuminating overview of Zen, Tibetan, and Soka Gakkai Buddhism. . . . This highly informative book is especially suited to the reader who lacks a background in Buddhism, though it is also a satisfying refresher course for anyone with prior knowledge.” —Publishers Weekly"Attorney and literary agent Ourvan has written an endearing field guide to the major sects of Buddhism in this country: Zen, Tibetan, and Soka Gakkai International, in which he himself was a senior leader for a time. At once a slice of memoir and an informal but well-researched history of Buddhism’s remarkable and growing success in the United States, Ourvan’s brief account touches upon personalities, events, and doctrines. VERDICT: An accessible history of modern Buddhism in America, Ourvan’s book fills a crucial gap, and deserves to attract many academic and nonacademic readers." —Library Journal

Ourvan attempts to give readers a contemporary look at three Buddhist schools of thought which have become part of the American scene. I could quibble with his histories of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, but he gives a fair presentation - given that he is a part of Sokka Gakkai, the other school he considers. He does observe Zen and Tibetan Buddhism from a Sokka Gakkai perspective, noting controversies in those schools while excusing controversies of Sokka Gakkai; and claiming that Zen and Tibetan Buddhism are more for the upper class, not egalitarian enough, due to the costs which can be associated with them in some cases. As far as I'm concerned, none of those controversies mean anything. They are more about press sensationalism than anything else.I would have liked a more sympathetic view of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, but the reader can get a somewhat reasonable view of all three schools - just be sure to read some of the writings from these schools of thought to gain a better perspective before making any final conclusions. Ourvan is a bit soft on what enlightenment is supposed to be in these schools. For me, Ourvan's vocabulary in discussing Buddhism is a little too colloquial, leaving some ideas hazy, but that might not be the case for other readers, since I am a scholar on Buddhism. You might like this approach.Give it a try.

Jeff Ourvan does a nice job of presenting a friendly but forthright picture of Buddhism in the US, in a kind of whirlwind view of three kinds of Buddhism that have taken hold here. The portrayal is sympathetic, but never shies away from scandals or controversies that some apologists have scanted. As a member of SGI I appreciated his in-depth look at Nichiren Buddhism, which sometimes gets short shrift in surveys of Buddhist America. As a former practitioner of Theravada/Vipassana, though, I was a little disappointed to see that part of the Buddhist-American picture given only a passing footnote. I was under the impression that it had also grown deep roots in America -- but that might be my skewed perspective. All-in-all, a good read for curious outsiders, Buddhist newbies, and old-timers alike.

I've read a lot of books on Buddhism but never one that I felt was this good at explaining Buddhism to a non-Buddhist. I feel this is the perfect Buddhist book that has been sorely lacking in our American literature and culture. Clearly the author seems to be a very well informed and deeply spiritual person but also practical and extremely engaged in trying to help the reader understand the differences in 3 popular sects of Buddhism in America. I really love that I can feel both the passion and compassion in this writing.I loved the introduction where the author really showed us his human side and let us get an inside view into his introduction into Buddhism. I think anyone who has a self-effacing attitude and can be real is always a gem - so kudos to the author for that! It was also very refreshing that the author, Jeff Ourvan, who practices Nichiren Buddhism seems able to impartially view the different practices and allow the reader to come to their own conclusions. He states his reasonings for practicing the Buddhism he has chosen but does so in a very informative and respectful manner. Again, what a satisfyingly refreshing and enlightened read.I really appreciated the explanation of the mentor disciple relationship in Buddhism as that has always confused me. The author's own explanation of his experience in selecting a mentor was helpful. I also am always very interested in what kind of person wrote this book, being a fledging writer myself, and I really like how he ended it by saying "I now live with my new wife, our three children, and, in my heart, my mentor on our mundane and exquisitely ordinary own little island of dharma." And then he goes on to say how he is able to strive for his own happiness daily through his Buddhist chanting. Very cool! The only other review on here was written by a Dave Balschum that is a very strange review of the book. It seems he got offended by the book, which is weird to me because I perceived the book to be very balanced. This reader, Dave, seems to have an agenda and it is unfortunate he, who is a Buddhist? maybe, has such harsh judgement, it seems personal? To me this seems to be the antithesis of Buddhism from what I understand of it. Also, this reader didn't really review the book. Enough on that but was worth mentioning since it is the only other review on here so far.All and all I would highly and enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in understanding Buddhism in America. I have already ordered a couple to send as gifts. I would like to say "Kudos" to the publisher for publishing this type of book. And I commend the author for personal, insightful, informative and very human heart to heart writing.

It was the witty cover art that first got my attention. But it was the galvanizing read and the totally fair-minded and enlightening writing that kept me highlighting, writing in and dog-earing this book. Having practiced Nichiren Buddhism for decades, I had to admit I still had only the most cursory knowledge of how these three most familiar variations of Buddhism in America varied, making me less than able to answer questions. It was fascinating and very encouraging to see both the important differences and the many commonalities. The author has arranged the material really cleanly. A series of topics and then each of the three explained in terms of THAT topic alone. What I loved is that he NEVER pits them against each other, simply and entertainingly lays out the background and tenets of each so the reader can form their own views and - if they want - their own comparisons. JUST - SO - GOOOOOD!

What a great book! Americans so often misinterpret eastern philosophy and try and americanize it to fit their hectic schedules all the while missing the need to be calm and sit still. This book is an amazing tool to understand the benefits of doing so.

In clear, engaging and oftentimes charming prose, Ourvan rolls out the provocative history and development of Buddhism and its schools, offering mini-biographies and fascinating stories of its eccentric founders and contributors. This book is not only informative but chock full of thoughtful gems and insights about the various forms of the practice. A must read for anyone interested in the quest for enlightenment.
