A"smoking" book. It is poignant w/out being redundant w/ old scoldings. Refreshingly inviting to admit the solution is not easy, but offers a well secured path. Title sounds more graphic to some than read is. Loved the supplement section and diversions. Cranshaw has been right there with us.

The thing that I enjoyed the most about this book, and what separates it from other quit-smoking related sources I’ve come across, is the fact that the author presents the information in a very straightforward, no-BS kind of way. Caroline Cranshaw doesn’t waste time beating around the bush and instead focuses on getting right to the point in an honest and direct way. Anyone that’s tried to quit before will know how hard it truly and will be aware of the kind of dedication it costs, the author is clearly not ignorant to this fact and it shows through the refreshing style of writing that doesn’t rely on babying the reader or hand-holding whatsoever. This is the type of book for people who are truly ready to kick their smoking in the butt and take initiative far from a mindset based on excuses and “I’ll start tomorrow” thoughts. Definitely recommend it.

I bought this because I already take some supplements, and wanted to see the recommendations for supplementation that are in this book. I am taking pretty much everything she recommends, with a couple of useful exceptions. And I like her exercises. It's a useful book, and down to earth. The author is very transparent about her own struggles and her language is accessible and understandable. The book is really helpful in terms of why addictions are so hard to kick (at many levels, including some that were new to me), why they're not merely an issue of will power, and how to nurture, not judge, oneself when trying to make positive change.

I have tried to quit smoking many times and never made past a few days. With the help of this book and the supplements they recommended I have now been smoke free for 4 months. The book is funny and had none of the bs about quitting with no withdrawals that some other books did. I used the chewable vitamin c and found it to be super helpful for in the car. I did the exercises that were recommended even though they may seem a little silly. Try it!

I love this book. She is so real- and so relatable. Everything she says feels like common sense with a dose of laughter- which diffuses the fear. Fear seems to be the reason people stay addicted. There are no scare tactics, great coping mechanisms and ways to diffuse the cravings until they go away. Because you have control over how you feel- and because really life is just about feeling good :)HIGHLY recommend and just gifted to my Dad for an early holiday gift!

Backstory : I received this Kindle edition a few days ago and just reviewed the book page by page just now. Over the years I have read all THE books by THE authors/experts about how to quit smoking. Like the author I have stopped and then returned to the practice/addiction that was so familiar. I have tried various techniques (including NRT) in addition to reading THOSE other how to books that promised to help me stop in spite of myself. I received some help and benefit from those other tools but it didn't last - I ended up returning to the known familiar problem. The Smoking Cure : Thank You Caroline Cranshaw! I almost decided against buying this but now I am SOoooo glad I did. I am now interested and motivated to make a committment to stop again. This person has lived what she talks about as a former tobacco user. She covers the "we all know that" information in non technical language. I am the sort of person who doesn't need to know the scientific research on a topic - I just want to learn "how" to do it! She has written this book as if she was running a workshop for a general audience. I felt as if she could have been my next door neighbor who just happens to know how to write for publication. If you identify with any of these descriptions then I would recommend you give this author's book a read : 1) You don't want to be "scared" into stopping but also want to accept the reality of this problem, 2) You want to know about the whole experience from getting started to doing it to what happens afterward AND how to make each step of the experience a step in the right direction, and 3) You would like to get all this information in one place so you can focus and know you have the tools you need even if you never look for more information. Ever. This book is the tutorial you need. It is well written, consistent, and she devotes about the same amount of space to each topic involved without leaving out any important concepts or suggestions. I am so impressed with the overall quality of this book and I will come back with an update about the results. I'm actually looking forward to stopping again knowing I have this book to use for support and encouragement!

Enjoyable methods used to beat the cravings. The vitamin supplements section was informative. This book offers a plethora of information to assist on the journey of becoming a non-smoker.

I was uncertain if I would be able top quit smoking. This book gave me the confidence and help I needed. I highly recommend it.

The Luminous Dead: A Novel, by Caitlin Starling

Review

“This claustrophobic, horror-leaning tour de force is highly recommended for fans of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Andy Weir’s The Martian.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Ghostly, mysterious, and terrifying, The Luminous Dead will have you rooted to the spot until the very last page.”  (Peng Shepherd, author of The Book of M)“The Luminous Dead dives into the human psyche and our ability for cruelty alongside compassion. Starling crafts a plot tight and gripping, weaves scenes dripping with wonder and terror, and keeps you wondering what’s real and what’s not until the very last page. Both beautiful and brutal, I loved it.” (K.A. Doore, author of The Perfect Assassin )“A harrowing, merciless descent into the human psyche. Starling’s prose is breathtakingly cinematic and left me without a molecule of spare oxygen. This book will catch you by the ankles and drag you backwards into a terrifying and inescapable reality. Read this one with all the lights on.” (Sarah Gailey, Hugo award-winning author of River of Teeth)“Starling’s debut is tense and well-paced, taut and terrifying. This book never lets you (or Gyre) breathe for more than an instant before pushing you further into the frightening unknown. A book you won’t want to put down until the resolution arrives.” (Elsa Sjunneson-Henry)“A tense psychological thriller and a gripping survival story that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. It’s a dark ride that’s worth every step.” (Martha Wells, author of The Murderbot Diaries)“An electric mix of The Descent and Gravity, Starling’s debut gives us an exciting and terrifying sf adventure set in the dangerous bowels of a distant planet. This story has hidden depths, secrets and mysteries to reveal. Highly recommended from start to finish.” (John Hornor Jacobs, award-winning author of The Sea Dreams it is the Sky)“Starling’s debut gives us an exciting and terrifying sf adventure set in the dangerous bowels of a distant planet. But like the enormous cavern system below the surface of Cassandra V, this story has hidden depths, secrets and mysteries to reveal. Highly recommended from start to finish.” (John Hornor Jacobs, award-winning author of The Sea Dreams it is the Sky)“The Luminous Dead managed to be the best sci-fi book coming in 2019. And the best horror novel. And the best queer story. This book is so many things at once, and I cannot wait for readers to discover the terrifying, complex world that Caitlin Starling has created.” (Mark Oshiro, author of Anger is a Gift)“The Luminous Dead is a gripping scifi thriller with an eerie, claustrophobic setting that held me captive until I finished it. I think part of me was left behind forever in Starling’s cave. This book will drag you into its dark, twisting depths and will not let you go.” (Emily Suvada, author of This Mortal Coil)

Caitlin Starling’s The Luminous Dead: A Novel is an intense psychological thriller that I couldn’t put down! The relationship between Em and Gyre is what really makes this story sing. For a significant period of time they are each other’s lifeline, and they’re each going through a kind of crucible. They change each other, and develop a remarkable relationship. The little bits of sci-fi influence allow unusual circumstances to arise, as the highly-developed suit Gyre wears becomes both a help and a hindrance, and also allows Em to influence her actions in certain ways. The natural dangers keep things tense. Gyre navigates strong currents of underground water, climbs along barely-there shelves, and is exposed to mysterious fungal spores. She’s pretty sure once or twice that she sees someone else, and when she discovers that one of the equipment caches is missing, that possibility suddenly becomes all too real. Tunnelers, of course, are a danger–they can cause cave-ins and create whole new landscapes underground. Hallucinations also become a problem eventually. My only (very mild) negative is that I got a bit confused toward the end with the different camps and different routes being cut off or opened up. There was also one plot thread that didn’t entirely get wrapped up, but I think that’s okay. It didn’t really need to be.All in all this is a wonderful psychological thriller, and I’ll have to read more by Caitlin Starling!

The main character in THE LUMINOUS DEAD is Gyre, a caver who signs a contract with a private mining company for what she believes is just another expedition to gather valuable ore deposits. Gyre is not totally forthcoming about her background and motive when she signs on with the company, which is to score a quick payday so that she can keep looking for her mother who abandoned her years ago. Gyre has been obsessed with finding out what happened to her mother and she sees this job as nothing more than a means to fund her continuing efforts going forward. What Gyre doesn't know yet is that her contractor and only lifeline to the outside world Em has motivations of her own that aren't simply mining for ore. Gyre and Em are connected via a communication device located inside Gyre's suit where Em can also monitor every aspect of Gyre's physical health. Their relationship starts out as a combative one as Gyre suspects that Em may be hiding something from her and not being completely honest about the job that she has been asked to do. It turns out that Gyre's suspicions are not entirely unfounded when she is able to access a video from her suit that shows a previous mining party who experience an incredible tragedy while exploring the same cave that Gyre is now embedded deep within. When Gyre lashes out at Em and threatens to quit and turn back, Em is forced to reveal that her parents were the ones in the video along with a few others. Something terrible happened to the party that Em has been struggling to discover the answer to. It turns out that she has sent dozens of other cavers on the same mission as Gyre with most of them dying in the treacherous tunnels trying vainly to reach the area where Em's parents were last documented to be alive. As Em continues to open up about what happened to her parents and their family business, her relationship with Gyre starts to change. It begins to become one of mutual understanding as they both are in similar situations: trying to find answers to missing family members. It also becomes a borderline romantic relationship of sorts. Eventually things really start to change as Gyre both sees and hears signs that she may not be alone inside the cave. Could it possibly be someone from the original doomed crew? Em's mother? Or could it be something far far worse that is now stalking Gyre as she tries to survive and find a way out of what could be her ultimate resting place? My first feeling about THE LUMINOUS DEAD was that the story is of a style that I like based on similar novels that I've previously read, one being The Descent by Jeff Long. Admittedly that one didn't take place on another planet, but the feel of it was much the same initially and the cave exploration aspect was as well. There were a few things that I really liked about this book. One being the mystery behind what happened to Em's parents and also Gyre's mother. I thought that was handled deftly as well as the additional mystery of whether what was also present in the cave was a person or a monster of some kind. The suspense of these two questions kept me wanting to read further. The characters of Gyre and Em were well done with both of them having their own demons driving them to find out what happened to lost loved ones. I didn't mind the fact that there was only a two-person dialogue for the entire book either, but at times it did get a little draggy for long stretches as the dialogues were quite frequent and went off on some lengthy tangents. This is ultimately where I found myself not being as into the book as I could have otherwise. For me the book seemed to take a long time to develop and for about the first 70% of it all we really get are conversations that sometimes are relevant to the story and sometimes not. I definitely enjoy when a story builds slowly to a crescendo, but I thought that this one took a little more time than most to get going. When the climax happens, it does so with a bang and it is very satisfying, but unfortunately the journey to get there is fraught with long periods of not much happening. So I have to say that I liked THE LUMINOUS DEAD, but fell just short of loving it. That being said, others may have a vastly different opinion and you should give this one a try if you enjoy books with cave exploration and mysterious things that go bump in the dark. In the end it was a solid book that I think offers a good enough amount for readers to enjoy.

This is not the book I was expecting from the little bit I read about it before starting to read. I expected much more sci fi/horror. Yes, it is still sci fi and horror but, for the most part, it is a character study and a psychological thriller about two women.Cassandra-V is a desolate mining planet populated with people trying to save enough money to get off the planet. Gyre Price is 22 years old and is hired to go underground in an unexplored cave to find new mineral deposits - she thinks. It's only after she's underground (alone) that she finds out just how perilous her mission is.This is a long book and it shows the skill of the author that she was able to keep my interest from beginning to end with two characters - Gyre and Em, her handler - and basically just the dialogue between them. There are caving sequences and diving sequences that throw in some variety, and some perfunctory horror scenes but mainly this is a story of the developing relationship between two troubled women.I recommend this book on the basis of what I've reviewed. If you're expecting something else, you might be disappointed.I received this book from Harper Voyager through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read this book and leave an unbiased review.

This is a very cool book. Strange, and you must suspend your reality, but very cool. Gyre was abandoned by her mother, who she desperately wants to find. She signs on to map a cave on a mining planet in order to make a lot of money and perhaps find out more. What she didn't expect was that she would become a sort of science experiment (my best description for the suit she wears) or that her controller would be Em. Em has issues of her own, which spool out slowly. There's good interplay between these two, the cave seems real, and the journey Gyre and Em take is amazing. There's lies, trickery, and all sorts of good stuff. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. I'm not sure that I would describe this as sci-fi, although I acknowledge that this isn't a real world. It's more a tale of two women in a challenging sci-fi like setting and I really liked it.

She got it from me and liked it because she had been there before since we used to live in El Paso, Texas

Moon's Puerto Vallarta guide had some good listings yet it still lacks the organization and descriptions that its counterpart the Foders series plants within it's guide to Puerto Vallarta. Within the Moon Guide the reader must search through the text or use the index to find what section to look in for a specific hotel or restaurant because everything is crammed together and not organized into sections such as hotels, restaurants, ect. The good side to this guide is that once you find what you were looking for the details are very realistic and true to pricing and other facts. Personally I would choose Foders guide over this one, but if it was the only one available or used as a companion it would have to be purchased.

As an on-the-road guide, this guide came up short. It was full of the sort of information I didn't need, and never seemed to quite deliver on the information I was seeking. It's ostensibly a guidebook about Puerto Vallarta, but most of the information was about trips to take beyond the city. That could be the nature of the city itself (most people use it as a jumping-off point for jungle, snorkeling, sailing, etc. day trips), but after looking through the guide repeatedly in an effort to figure out what sort of things we could do after we were done strolling the highly touted but numbingly touristy Isla Cuale and walking up and down the Malecon day after day, I wasn't able to find much in this guide.I got this guide because we were also headed up the Riviera Nayarit to go to Sayulita. The restaurant recommendations were pretty weak and missed some of the best spots in town.So was it worth its packing weight? Maybe for someone who plans to find accommodations on-the-fly, and who doesn't want to do any research before going. But in the end, not for me.

I disagree with the two reviews I just read. I recently got my Moon Guide to Puerto Vallarta and I find the info very intriguing. There are lists of hotels by cost and plenty of info on what to do in the city. Night life and day time too. And a listing by cost for that too. The suggestions of things to do in and outside the city are quite varied and sound great for someone who doesn't want just the usual touristy stuff. I can't wait to make use of this guide the next time I take a trip with friends!
