We are designed for a rhythm of work and rest. So one hour a day, one day a week, and one week a year, we turn off our devices and worship, feast, play, and rest together.4. We wake up before our devices do, and they "go to bed" before we do.5. We aim for "no screens before double digits" at school and at home.6. We use screens for a purpose, and we use them together, rather than using them aimlessly and alone.7. Car time is conversation time.8. The first computer I ever owned was an Apple Macintosh Classic II. Released in October 1991, my Mac Classic boasted a 16 megahertz CPU, 2 megabytes of RAM and 40 megabytes of memory — 80 if you splurged. It weighed 16 pounds. I felt privileged as a graduate student to have such computing power on my desk. Some of my peers had to make do with word processors or, even worse, typewriters.Today, my iPhone 6SE weighs 4 ounces, has a 1.85 gigahertz CPU, 2 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of memory. It wakes me up in the morning, tracks my diet and exercise progress, and handles all my emails, texts and social media. It takes pictures, shoots video and streams movies, TV shows and music on demand. It stores books and magazines that I read, including the Bible. When my kids get bored — or, to be honest, when I get tired of paying attention to them — it entertains them.My Mac Classic was a tool. My iPhone is (almost) my life. And that’s a problem.All of us know how useful technology is. We can do things with it that we cannot do without it. In The Tech-Wise Family, Andy Crouch points out what many of us fail to see as we use technology, namely, that it is changing us and our families, and not always for the better.To understand his point, think of what technology is and what families are for.First, according to Crouch, the defining characteristic of technology is that it is “easy everywhere.” Think of your smartphone. It is easy to use (my 3-year-old has it figured out) and it can be taken everywhere. Twenty-six years ago, I had a phone (landline, not mobile), a camera, a video camera, cassette tapes, a boom box, a TV, videocassettes, a VHS player, boxes of books, stacks of magazines and a computer. Together, they filled a small room and weighed several hundred pounds. Now all those things are accessible on a four-ounce device that fits in my pocket.Second, although families have many purposes, Crouch suggests that its key purpose is “the forming of persons.” This has less to do with “being” (what we are) than “becoming” (who we can be). Becoming a person is a matter of virtue formation, and Crouch focuses on two virtues in particular: “wisdom and courage.” Wisdom, he writes, is “knowing, in a tremendously complex world, what the right thing to do is — what will be most honoring of our Creator and our fellow creatures.” Courage is “the conviction and character to act.” Forming these virtues requires loving relationships: “If you don’t have people in your life who know you and love you in that radical way, it is very, very unlikely you will develop either wisdom or courage.”Anyone with a family knows that long-term, emotionally intimate relationships are the exact opposite of easy everywhere. The phrase, “There’s an app for that,” applies to many routine tasks, but not to cultivating intimacy with your spouse, rearing your children to be responsible adults, contributing to the wellbeing of society or leaving a legacy for your descendants. These require hard work at specific times and in specific places. Technology and family, in other words, point in different directions.The question Crouch seeks to answer in The Tech-Wise Family is how to put technology in its proper place. How can we use it without our families being overcome by it? Crouch offers 10 principles that his family has tried to live by — not always successfully, he admits.1. We develop wisdom and courage together as a family.2. We want to create more than we consume. So, we fill the center of our homes with things that reward skill and active engagement.3. We are designed for a rhythm of work and rest. So, one hour a day, one day a week, and one week a year, we turn off our devices and worship, feast, play and rest together.4. We hope to die in one another’s arms.To be honest, I found many of Crouch’s suggestions radical, especially when compared to how I and members of my family actually use technology. Crouch jokes that he’s suggesting people become “almost Amish.” He also insists that his family’s commitments need not be your family’s commitments. Still, these commitments and the rationale behind them should spark some new ideas in you, your spouse and your kids, hopefully leading to a chastened use of easy-everywhere devices and a wiser, more courageous home.

This relatively small book took me much longer to get through than I anticipated because I had to stop and chew on the ideas for a while! Andy Crouch presents wonderful guideposts for parents to consider implementing in the homes at some capacity in order to develop children with character, specifically encouraging them to be people with wisdom and courage. The theme of wisdom and courage is carried through the book, and he challenged me to cultivate a home where my kids are experiencing a rich family life that is more rewarding and enticing than the "easy everywhere" entertainment. Crouch is a musician so he places high value on the virtues of learning to play an instrument and singing as a family—something that only this very recent age has stopped doing as a family unit.Final thing: he does address the prevalence and dangers of pornography, but rather than simply advocating that parents take control of their kids' devices and have access to them at all times, he gives solid advice on teaching children that devices are meant to be used together and with a purpose, rather than aimlessly and alone. Putting technology in its proper place is a much more effective way of looking at this issue than only discussing internet filters. The quote he used from Martin Luther has stuck with me, "You can't stop the birds from flying overhead but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair."

Mr. Negus is now on his 9th Edition of this gem of a book that is about 850 pages long. This is a great book for beginners as well as the Linux learned that want to learn more. The book is divided up into 6 (VI) parts: Getting Started (rudimentary topics), Becoming a Power User, a Sys Admin, a Server Admin, Security, and Cloud services. The chapters are short and concise. This may frustrate more experienced users who want to dive deeper. But to me, this book is about Linux. So, for example, it doesn't go into Bash or Korn Shell, however, it does give one the basics on Linux shell scripting. Overall, this is a wonderful place to start for most readers that wish to grasp Linux from a single book.

The first couple chapters are, what is linux, what are the different distro's and desktop environments. (GNOME/KDE/UNITY, etc)All of these I already knew, but if you are new to Linux, they give you a good idea of how it is different. Then it goes into power user, bash scripting/terminal use, then systems network admin topics are covered. If you are 100% new to Linux than this book will be over your head past the second or third chapter. You will basic Shell scripting, editors such as Vi, setting up Red Hat/CentOS server's and securing them with SELinux. (Secure Linux) The Scripting, Secure Linux, and setup of servers on Red Hat directly link to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux certification exams. This is great, but should have been more clear on the name of the book. If you want a more general Linux book, look for Linux Fundamentals, I also have that and it not distro specific.

It's a good book over all, I have been using linux for 5 years now and mainly use Arch, so a majority of this book was irrelevant. However I gave it 4 stars because the things that I found useful where extremely useful. I know this book was wrote as a guide and it's not meant to be the man page for every command, but there where some flags she did not go over for a majority of the commands discussed that I felt where vital to every day use of linux, lspci -k , is a command i use almpst every time I am troubleshooting and it wasn't mentioned. Again I know it is not a man page for lspci but that flag -k is a life changer.All and all, it is a good book and for $30 you cant beat it.

I haven't finished the book, but so far I really appreciate the book. The author gives explains methods/concepts, gives step by step insturctions and then explains a little more. This is exactly the book i was looking for. I'm completely new to LInux and pretty new to non-windows use of a computer. I've been trying to learn Linux but most books and tutorials do not get down to the basic level. The author explains the basic design of the Linux os, and gives good examples/explanations. The book doesn't seem too technical or boring, like a glossary. For me, this is exactly what I needed.

Shipping/Packaging: purchased book new and received a dog eared copy with a creased cover. It was packaged in an ill fitting box with too little filler so it bounced around during shipping. Cover is scratched as well. I know I’m being nit-picky, but I expected more from amazon for a $30+ book.Browsing through the content, it seems fairly comprehensive. I don’t have much to add beyond that yet.

I am using this book as a supplement to another book that I am using to study for the RHCSA/RHCE. I'm only 130+ pages into this & I'm glad I purchased it. This book takes you from scratch, assuming you know nothing about Linux, and takes you all the way through RHCE knowledge. The author is RHCE certified & used to administer RHCE exams; he also teaches RHCE courses.The book contains clearly written examples & explanations. The sequence of material is very well chosen & you get an intuitive understanding of Linux. (I have skimmed ahead.) The biggest advantage to this book over other Linux books is that the Chris Negus has a teaching background & so his explanations & overall presentation feels more flowing & intuitive than what you'll see in other books. I chose this book over another Linux book for that reason.

I would buy it again, but I wish that it was stated significantly more clearly that this thing is LOOSELEAF. I opened the package and almost spilled all the pages out on the floor, in which case I probably would have packed it back up and sent it back to these people. How long would it take to reorganize it if you dropped it on the floor? They should at least have something to temporarily hold it together even if it's not a full binder.I'm glad that they sell it and it is a lot cheaper than most of the alternatives, but there's no way I'd give it 5 stars without some form of at least temporary binding--especially since they don't warn you in the description.

First off, I'm not sure how anyone who may have ordered this was confused about it being the book version. It clearly states CD-ROM. Now, I think anyone needing this should get the book version. This CD is only good for a limited number of installations. After installing, I was having issues and it wouldn't open. I called support, I had to do a few things, then uninstall. They said it was a common problem. They did also say that the reinstall would not count against me. I suggest if you have any problems and need to reinstall then contact support first.

Perfect book for code enforcement.

As an owner/builder, this CD version of the 2008 NEC code is just what I needed to work through the electrical phase of my project. The code is searchable and picking through it to find what I needed was fairly simple. I used this CD in conjunction with an excellent book by Ray Mullin - Electrical Wiring Residential. The book and this CD are perfect partners and all I needed. I also have the IECC and IRC on CD. The limitation to only 2 product loads of the NEC with the CD key might be irritating for some people. In my case it needed to be loaded on only one computer and wasn't an issue. I'm guessing if you called the provided phone number, you would be able to explain and exceed that limitation for further loads. 2 load limitation takes away a star.EDIT 21Mar2010: Had to format my hard drive. The NEC CD loaded up no problem on the second go-round. We'll see what happens when I get to #3 someday.

About the Author

Brennan M.R. Spiegel, MD, MSHS, FACG is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases, UCLA School of Medicine, and in the Division of Gastroenterology, VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System. He is the section chief for Health Services Research at the UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases, and Chief of Education and Training in the UCLA GI Fellowship Training Program, which is amongst the largest GI Training Programs in the country.Dr. Spiegel attended Tufts University where he majored in Philosophy and Community Health, and obtained his medical degree from New York Medical College. He received training in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at UCLA, and completed advanced studies in Health Services Research in the UCLA School of Public Health, where he received a master’s degree in Health Services. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He currently teaches in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA.Dr. Spiegel’s research interests have focused on acid-peptic disorders, chronic liver disease, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and functional bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia. He has performed research across a range of health services methodologies, including health-related quality of life measurement, survey design and administration, systematic review, meta-analysis, multivariable regression analysis, survival analysis, expert panel research, quality improvement, cost-effectiveness analysis, budget impact modeling, and use of clinical informatics to support decision making. He is a peer reviewer for numerous medical journals, and is on the editorial boards for the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has contributed to the publication of more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, as well as numerous abstracts, book chapters, and monographs.Hetal A. Karsan, MD, FACG, FACP is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates, one of the largest gastroenterology groups in the country, at which he is a partner. He is also a practicing clinician at Emory University.Dr. Karsan attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology. While an undergraduate, he taught a course on Evolution and Diversity to fellow college students and won awards for undergraduate biomedical research from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He obtained his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and went on to train in Internal Medicine at Boston University, where he completed his medical internship and residency. Dr. Karsan served as acting Chief Medical Resident while at Boston University. He completed fellowship at UCLA Medical Center, where he trained in gastroenterology, advanced interventional endoscopy, and transplant hepatology. While at UCLA, he won several awards and was nominated for the Teaching Fellow of the Year by the Department of Internal Medicine. He also sought formal training in clinical outcomes research at UCLA.Dr. Karsan is active in numerous professional organizations and was elected as Fellow by both the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians. In addition to contributions to various peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters, he also serves as a peer reviewer for medical journals and is on an editorial board. Pros:- excellent high yield book- great explanations- clinically relevant discussions- entire series is excellentCons:- NoneI was searching for a good book to hit the key point of hepatology. This book knocked it out of the park. It identified high yield topics that are on tests and also identified common clinical scenarios making this an essential tool. If you have to read anything in your fellowship or for studying for boards this should be it. I loved this book so much I purchased the whole series including the IBD book and the General GI book, which are both excellent.

I bought this last minute and was a quick read before boards. I have no idea how much this actually helped as I felt none of the questions referred directly to the difficult cases, nevertheless it gets you thinking about the different process and how to treat

I don't know yet how effective it will be, but it makes sense to study mainly what you "don't know" rather than re-hash all the bread and butter stuff most GI docs do everyday in their practice. That's why I like Dr Spiegel's fresh, challenging format which gives (what I believe) to be board relevant case Vignettes with detailed answers and quick "bottom line" facts as take away points from each case. I take the GI recert exam in April '13. Will re-post at that time.

Excellent companion to "Acing the GI board exam" - covered liver in much more detail. Was helpful.

As a veteran of taking the GI Boards (20 years Board Certified, so this is my third time around) I can say without hesitation this book along with the first " Acing the GI Boards" are the best Board review books I have read (and I have read them all!). They are concise, include only the pertinent information and present the data in the manner one will find it on the boards : Symptom based, rather than category based. Without a doubt the best bang for the buck and more importantly: the most efficient use of time. You'd be crazy to take the GI Boards without reading these two books.
