Review

"Zippy, smart."―New York (magazine)"Readers of this compelling history will appreciate the sweat behind every joke."―Washington Post"Mr. Smith's book feels like a visit to a distant time."―New York Times"[A] substantial, many-faceted oral history....This superbly well-edited choral work illuminates the enormous effort, creativity, collaboration, and hustle required for producing a hilarious, news-focused, four-times-a-week comedy show and the chutzpah necessary for taking on the powers-that-be."―Booklist"Sometimes our book dreams get answered....If you ever longed to be in the room for epic moments like Stewart's post-9/11 on-air address, his grudge matches with Fox News, the famous Indecision presidential election coverage and more, this is your printed word moment of zen.―Detroit Free Press"Deftly recount[s] the way Stewart's sensibilities, political realities (and unrealities), defining events like 9/11, advances in technology and changes in the television news landscape moved the show from spectator to player."―USA Today"Smith digs deep into the show's ascendance and cultural influence as if he was one of the show's meticulous fact-checking news-tape researchers...Smith lets the show's stars, crew, and guests tell the show's unvarnished history. Fortunately, most every one interviewed-from Stephen Colbert to longtime showrunner Ben Karlin to Sen. John McCain-possesses an A-plus wit...it doesn't flinch from digging into the show's most contentious moments... in the Age of Trump, the time has never been better to delve into the minds of the masters who became a vital part of our democracy."―Entertainment Weekly"Smith gives readers sound bites from some smart, funny and self-aware people waxing rhapsodic about their 'let's put on a show' adventures...the seeming candor of Stewart in particular gives the book a refreshing amount of depth, particularly regarding backstage drama...the real measure of the show and the book that bears its name is, did it have a point, and, moreso, was it funny in making it. The answer, on both counts, is a resounding, laugh-out-loud 'yes.'"―Chicago Tribune"Comedy Central's The Daily Show was a cultural phenomenon, and now it gets the oral history it deserves...Smith tells the show's story through artfully arranged first-person recollections. ..it is more than a collection of famous moments, but rather a work of distinctive, original social commentary."―The National Book Review"There is solace in this chatty and highly informative tome....THE DAILY SHOW (THE BOOK) is like eating popcorn, in that it's light and fun and easy to consume....the book is a love letter to the people that built The Daily Show and make it work night after night."―Vulture

Say what you will about fiction, but I'll choose memoirs over novels any day of the week. Even though I don't have cable, I have been religiously watching Daily Show clips for years now. So, the prospect of combining the those two things made my mouth water. Now having just finished it, it delivered pretty much everything I was expecting: basically, all of the "behind the scenes" stuff you don't see. I also found the treatment of Craig Killborn's years to be interesting. Surprisingly, there wasn't as much drama as I thought there would be, but honestly that's a good thing. What really comes through is how much like a family they were/are, and how devoted they've become to exposing b.s., no matter the source. It's truly amazing. As for the style of the book, it plays out like a talking-head documentary. A little bit different, but the narrative still unfolds coherently. So, if you're a fan of the show, getting this book is a no-brainer.

I love long oral history books on a variety subjects (and they are good value for the money, lots of content), and was a fan of the Daily Show (but my personal favorite was The Colbert Report). Lots of cool details and stories here for fans of the show in its best era. I'm only about 1/2 through it and it's good -- I must say a few things seem a bit dated already, particularly some of the stuff about the Bush era, in light of who the President is now and events in general since that time. They are open in this book that the crew and show are biased to the liberal side -- I do think Jon Stewart did a reasonably good job of jabbing both sides, obviously with more against the right. Loved when he went after the media talking heads and news biz as a whole, both sides. But I personally would prefer a little bit more balanced approach for a show like this, making fun of both sides and pointing out all their hypocrisy and bs, which they both have in spades.

I'm on CD # 6 of the 12 CD series (I think it's 12? It's a bunch!) that is funny, thoughtful, impartial, thorough story of how the Daily Show came to be, from start to current day, with many interviews and comments by all those involved with the show. I'm enjoying the heck out of it-- well researched and entertaining. The only thing I would have done differently is to record the actual voices of those who were interviewed (all the writers, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, etc) rather than get voice-over actors in there to simply voice their commentaries. The only real voice on the book (that I know for sure) was Jon Stewart, who did comment and narrate all his own pieces. I'm sure that hire the original people would have been a logisitical nightmare and would have cost a fortune, but it would have been wonderful.

Loved this book! I love that Jon Stewart not only provides a lot of information in the book but that it interviews everyone from current and previous correspondents to writers and producers of the show. The book delves pretty deep from the beginning of the show to the end with some juicy bits in between. I'm a huge fan of the show and am of this book!

One of my fav books ever. I was a huge fan of The Daily Show and Jon, so I found it all super entertaining and interesting. I couldn't believe how hard it was just to put together one show, I don't know how Jon did it for so long. It had to be draining, both mentally and physically. If your a fan of The Daily Show, you gotta read this. You won't regret the purchase, I promise. The format is an oral history format, so if thats not your thing, you musn't buy it.

If you're a fan of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart you'll love this book. It chronicles the evolution of the Daily Show from original host Craig Kilborn through Jon Stewart's last days on the show. It walk you through the behind the scenes struggles to change the direction of the show from "fake news" to actually a place where people got their news. If there are disputes between people, whether people working together on the show or guests - the author provides both viewpoints. Personally Jon Stewart was where I tuned in to get my take on politics and issues of the day and I can't tell you how much I miss him. Although he more than earned his "retirement". I would highly recommend this book to anyone who expressed an interest.

This was a fantastic format for chronicling one of the most important (THE most important ?) political satire shows of our time. Anyone paying attention knew Stewart was a mensch, but hearing from the whole cohort of creators of the Daily Show will show you just how brilliant and talented Stewart and his team is/was, and what a courageously decent guy it took at the helm to make this kind of TV and comedy history. This was an engaging, funny, fascinating page turner. Do yourself a favor and enjoy !

-The Daily Show had turned into a major program to understand the country and how it works, under the hand of Jon Stewart. This is a superb book, almost a day-by-day account, with no straight text but set up in quotes by all involved. It is definitely an insiders view of how the show came to be during the Stewart years, good days and bad, good times and bad, great times and horrific.-If you are in the least interested in The Daily Show, how it was put together and how it aired, I recommend this book with the highest praise.

This book is SO INTERESTING. It's not an "easy read" unless you're trained in reading academic texts that can be dense. It contains some jargon, but overall it is an amazing contribution to sociological methodology. It is examination into how our disciplinary practices exclude the transformative knowledge especially knowledge generated by women novelists who use haunting/ghosts as a trope to investigate that which empiricism cannot readily ascertain. It is intersectional in its analysis and also provides insight into how Jung and Freud basically stole some of their ideas from a Russian schizophrenic woman who became a psychoanalysis scholar in her own right. It will blow open your traditional grasp on disciplinary sociology and leave you with lots of ideas to contemplate and explore as you develop your own research methodology for collecting and analyzing data for social justice studies.

A really moving and important look at haunting as methodology, and for exploring haunting as a mode of identifying how systems of power and sociality coexist in the current day. I'll note that I read "A Glossary of Haunting" by Eve Tuck and C. Ree before I read this book, so my reading was pretty heavily colored by that essay (which I strongly recommend to everyone ever all the time.) I particularly enjoyed chapters three and four, as I thought they lent themselves most strongly to what I do as a historian, so obviously ymmv on that point. Her weird obsession with haunting being fixed by justice, and as a means towards a solution (or a signpost towards that solution) was very odd to me given what "Glossary" has to say, and I'm still teasing out how I feel about that (can we give ghosts justice? Will ghosts just go away?)The book is very beautifully written, though, and I will no doubt mine it heavily for quotations in the future! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone thinking about haunting as a theoretical concept for their work.

Gordon presents an alternative and unique perspective on other ways of knowing. She helps us to understand the limits of traditional disciplines, such as sociology, and shows us how to go beyond those limits.

Gordon's passion for literature goes beyond admiration; she chooses to look closely into two fiction pieces to study our past; ghosts that haunts us. And why fiction? Any literary piece is part of a larger body of general knowledge and it's as a result of the influences that the authors have had in their lives and the ways they read/remember us hence becoming a collective intellect that takes us to where we were/are and might want to go.

Super awesome read!

Avery Gordon is, by far, one of brightest and best social theorists. Her examination of haunting and ghosts is worthwhile to anyone interested in how power functions in the postmodern world.

One of the most enjoyable pieces of theory writing I have read for a long time. A beautiful way of using language to enter into new forms of understanding our dilemmas and difficulties. Ghostly Matters is as much literature as it is a critical view on our known forms of constructing knowledge.

A very important book. Highly recommended.
