About the Author

 Maida Heatter, a.k.a. "the Queen of Desserts", is the author of nine classic dessert cookbooks, including the New York Times best-seller and James Beard Award-winning Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts. She is a member of the James Beard Foundation Hall of Fame, has been named to Cook's Magazine's Who's Who in Cooking, and was one of the first people inducted into the Chocolatier Hall of Fame. I've been cooking from various Maida Heatter books for 25 years now, and though I have quite a few other cookbooks, none come close to the level of her 5 cookbooks (plus 3 compilation books of the same recipes).There's no point in my picking out a few great recipes in this book - you will like them all.I have made perhaps 50% of the recipes in all her books, some a few times, some very many times. In those thousands of desserts, all but a couple were wonderful. Some dessert recipes are designed to just look good - but Maida's desserts ALWAYS taste great. Some are fancier than the others, and (particularly in her later dessert books) some take quite a bit of time to create - choose the recipe for the occasion.This is her first cookbook and if you read it carefully she will teach you how to do everything you need. Read the introduction, get the right equipment/pans and get the right ingredients. Follow the instructions too! She is the first to point out that if you use margine instead of butter, or this instead of that, then the recipe may not work. Just do everything exactly as she says and you will be rewarded with a success EVERY time.With very few exceptions, the ingredients needed to make her recipes are widely available. You may choose to buy the best chocolate if you like (and I try to do so), but the desserts are great regardless. She has a few flourless recipes using ground almonds, but I've not been successful in grinding my own and can't seem to buy it locally.Without a doubt the best dessert cookbook author ever!

I love to cook, with a cookbook count to prove it. Now, though, I'm cutting back and each volume must earn its place on the shelf. Seeking a single outstanding dessert book covering a wide range of recipes to replace several "ho-hum" volumes, I was pleased to see Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts in a paperback version for a small investment. It arrived yesterday and I "devoured" it in one setting. The author thoroughly explains how to achieve the best results with her recipes that range from very easy to nicely challenging, which makes this a great choice for anyone wishing to thrill sweet teeth. This is a keeper, and I expect to "upgrade" to a larger copy of the book to regularly dust with flour and cocoa powder in my kitchen.

EVERY recipe that I have tried out of any of her books has worked perfectly for me. I bake for students on a personal level and there hasn't been one recipe that they haven't said, "more, more." And they are honest. Other baker's recipes have not been so well received, but Maida Heatter's are always raved about. Students like that they are not overly sweet. I agree and appreciate it. Her instructions guarantee that each attempt turns out perfectly. I have baked for many, many years and I wished I had found out about her 50 years ago!!

Home bakers will love this Maida classic - out of print like most of her other books but available on Amazon Some are used - they one I bought looked brand new.

Another Maida Heatter book for my cook book collection. Have used a few recipes so far and enjoy using these easy to understand cook books.

This is truly a classic. Happy to get a clean copy! The Lemon Cake and other recipes are awesome!

This is the third book I have of hers. She has so many idea to add flavor to the usual baking one does. This is her largest book, and maybe her first, but worth owning if you enjoy baking.
