I feel like the title of this book should be "The Racing Navigator: Why I think Stirling Moss is a Natural Racer." I was really looking forward to getting this book and learning the technical aspects of racing the open air grand prix cars of the 50's (or cars in general), but what I got was mostly anecdotal references to why the author thinks Stirling Moss did this or that and observations from the navigator's seat. There is an especially odd section where he talks about speaking in tenths to describe racing conditions that essentially has nothing to do with racing theory or practice. Just when you think things are going to get informative, the author reflects on how he a driver got into a situation and confidently got out of it, but leaving all the details out and attributing it to some sort of ethereal property of the driver. I gave it 3 starts because as a historical reference it's pretty good, but it's severely lacking in both the theory and practice of fast driving.
Fascinating account of a guy that rode with the best race car drivers (as a navigator on public road courses) and motorcycle riders (in a side car). Explains his personal point of view as to why he would put his life in the hands of others. Admits he was not at the driver's talent level then humbly gives what seems an objective point of view explaining why they were so great. Written with a slight personal element that makes you feel like you are there. One of the best historical type books by a person who did it and apparently did NOT rely on ghost writers to tell it in the vein of today's fan type vanity books. In its own way as good as Mark Donohue's "The Unfair Advantage".Gives a great explanations of power oversteer which hangs the rear end of the car out to help steer it through a turn as was used in racing by only the best drivers in his period of history.
I bought the book for 2 reasons, races and Dennis Jenkinson, a master on writing. The surprise was an interview with Ayrton Senna done by Jenkinson himself, included on last pages of the book.Absolutelly marvelous questions and answers, and never published here in Brazil. There are many good historic pictures and some didatic drawings to make even greater a great text.
This is the book that got my into driving and into a Miata. Thank Denis
Book was definitley not the one shown as for sale
A classic indeed! Denis lets you feel like you are right there. Then he gives a detailed explanation of what happeds when and why!
Owned a copy as a young man. Got another copy when that one became too dog-eared to use.
Denis Jenkinson was privileged to be the co-driver to Stirling Moss during the 1955 Mille Miglia so his experience in motor racing, as well as his journalism skills, makes this an accurate and well written book. It is a slice of history and so the reprint is necessary reading for anyone who cares for the sport.
