This picture book pairs the dual stories of powerful activists César Chávez and Dolores Huerta. When Chávez was a child, his family lost their home and became migrant farmworkers, and Chávez had to drop out of school to work. As an adult, he continued to work in the fields. When Huerta was young, she moved to California, where her mother let poor farmworkers stay at her hotel for free, and when she grew up, she taught farmworkers’ children. Each double-page spread features text in both Spanish and English, with Huerta’s story on the left, and Chávez’s on the right-hand side. Cepeda’s bright mixed-media images convey the dramatic stories. One scene shows Chávez fleeing poisonous pesticides sprayed from an overhead plane, and in another, particularly striking spread, Chávez and Huerta come together to lead a 340-mile march to demand better living and working conditions for farmworkers. I use this as a mentor text to teach compare and contrast of the lives of two important leaders who collaborated for change.
Good story... for younger children.

I bought it as a gift for three darling Mexican American/Native American girls. The 8 year old read it as part of her reading assignment for school and loved it. I had the pleasure of spending a day with Dolores Huerta recently when she visited Humboldt State University. What a wonderful woman she is. I plan to order additional copies of this book very soon.
I am glad to see a story that acknowledges that Chávez did not work alone in this struggle, and that mentions not only the grape strike, but the immigration act of 1986 as well. However, this story gives a very brief account of Huerta and Chávez's amazing work. It is also historically inaccurate. It says in one page that the 2 asked people to protest dangerous pesticides by boycotting grapes, and that as a result, the farmworkers won a healthier work environment. The next page talks about the 340-mile march as a protest against low wages. But the march happened during, not after, the boycott, and the boycott and grape pickers' strike continued for years after the famous march from Delano to Sacramento, CA. ([...])
Growing up, my mother told us we had to boycott grapes. At that time, I only understood farmworkers were treated badly and Cesar Chavez was helping them. Years later, I’ve found a bilingual children’s book that would have helped me understand, not only the history of the farmworker movement, but who Cesar Chavez was and how he and Dolores Huerta worked together to inspire a national consciousness about the treatment of farmworkers. I love that this book introduces Dolores and Cesar as children and connects their early life experiences to the decisions they made as they grew up. I value the discussion of poverty, which the author introduces by explaining that Cesar’s family ended up working as migrant farmworkers after they lost their home. Given the shame and confusion children are apt to feel when their family faces eviction and/or loss of a home, the book offers an important perspective on family displacement by following Cesar throughout the loss, showing how it impacted his life as an activist for human dignity. It also does a good job of showing how a teacher, Dolores Huerta, became a social justice leader, adding a texture and dimension to those in the teaching profession that students might not otherwise get an opportunity to witness.The illustrations by Jose Cepeda really welcome readers into the story and younger children will be engaged visually. His illustrations are lively and are reminiscent of comic book characters.I learned several things about the early lives of Caesar and Dolores that enriched my understanding of them as people and about the farmworker movement, so while the book is focused on ages four to eight, I suspect adults will learn something new as well.Given that I longed for bilingual children’s books when my two sons were growing up, I only wish I had known about this book earlier. I applaud our local library for having a copy on display and bringing it to my attention.
