About the Author

Donald Voet received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University and did postdoctoral research in the Biology Department at MIT. Don took up a faculty position in the department of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, upon completing his postdoctoral work. He has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, the University of California San Diego, and the Weismann Institute of Science in Israel. Judith Voet received her Ph.D. from Brandeis University and did postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College and the Fox  Chase Cancer Center. She taught at the University of Delaware before moving to Swarthmore College. Together with Don Voet, she is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education.

If you need to get caught up on modern biochemistry then this is the book to start before foraging through the modern journals. The only complaint as others have pointed out, is that the last 3 chapters are not included and have to be downloaded from the publisher's website, but that is no biggie . You probably won't reference those chapters too much anyway unless you are interested in a specific topic in them but they are shallow compared to the rest of the text.Just start with this book if you are already familiar with biochemistry and need more information. This is a great reference text for a lab or anyone.IF you are new to the whole topic and your teacher is not recommending this book then buy a simpler text like Lehninger's biochemistry which is a decent introduction. This book is way better but it is far more awful to read cover to cover and then be tested over. You really also need the study guide or problem book with this book if you have to use it for a class.

Not the best biochem book, but the seller was fast and it was an old edition that was super cheap. This book reads like stereo instructions. There are so many better Biochemistry books out there.

If you're not ready for it, this Biochemistry textbook will hit you like a ton of bricks. The solid walls of text and massive, detailed figures can be very intimidating, making this book not for the faint of heart nor the uninitiated. For basic Biochemistry I would recommend Berg, et. al Biochemistry; it is a bit less daunting and not as heavy.That having been said, for someone who already has a feel for biochemistry this book is incredible. The level of detail here is mind-boggling and for someone who knows the basics they can handle the avalanche of detail and get quickly from the basic info to the more advanced content and really start to appreciate the multi-faceted discipline that is biochemistry. For someone who likes words the text is bulky but well-written, thorough and yet concise. The two authors are clear and provide lots of information but in a clear way. For visual learners, this textbook has no shortage of elaborate and helpful figures bursting with color and detail. More physics-based techniques like Mass Spec. and NMR are only glossed over but for just about everything else from basic cell biology to protein structure to carbohydrate uses to DNA replication there is a lot to be learned here. Recommended, for sure.

This is an excellent textbook. The writing is exceptionally clear, the organization is thorough and logical, and the illustrations are often beautiful and are accompanied by detailed captions. The authors make a consistent effort to describe the research which supports current thinking about biochemistry.If there is any flaw in the book, it is that the level of detail is often overwhelming, to the point that you lose sight of the main point of a section. In spite of the book's length, the descriptions of research can sometimes be terse, requiring a lot of re-reading to connect the dots. The text is so long that the last three chapters are not included in the physical book and need to be accessed online.I highly recommend this book, but I would advise getting a backup biochem textbook for those times when you get bogged down in detail. If it's your class text, hopefully your instructor will summarize or skip some of the lengthier sections.

i am giving it 5 because well it's a textbook and i need it for class. is it good? well by professor standards and realms of biochem, Voet is the expert and the book of choice. do i like this book? HELL NO! he just goes on and on about techniques and grad research, which is helpful, but what i need for my undergraduate course is hard to pick out.

Don't really use for the class, but can be a good informative read.
