It's an OK book. Pretty basic. Would have liked more JSON focus. If you are just starting out it is a quick way to get up to speed but quite pricey.
If all you need is the documentation on how to work with JSON or XML, Microsoft does a great job of providing that. However, if you have specific things that you want to do, "Optimize a Selective XML Index" or "Rename a JSON Key" as a couple of examples from the book, the Microsoft documentation can leave you wanting. That is where this book comes in. A lot of books you will want to read, cover-to-cover, to glean the use of them. Here, while you should still do that, the real use is much more "real world" focused. I need to ... looking in the Contents ... "Troubleshoot a Returned Null" ... Ah, there it is. Cool.The examples are very clearly defined. The solutions are not just defined, but documented as to why they are the solution. In many cases alternatives are included and discussed.If you have to work with JSON or XML within SQL Server (and more and more, we're all using JSON), then you really want to have this reference on your desk.
This book is great!!! XML and JSON are things that every DBA needs to know. The book has a straightforward way of showing advanced SQL processing techniques that I really enjoyed reading. This book is one I am going to keep handy at the office because it is that good.
The examples were very helpful. My team and I used this book to help us develop and successfully deploy a SQL server based REST API project.
