This is a good reference book for a DBA (or a wanna-be DBA). The only problem I have is the title, there is really nothing "VISUAL" about it. Its just another DB2 reference book aimed at DBAs. I am not a DBA, but am a pretty technical DB2 developer. I was hoping for a book that would help me understand some of the thornier problems like "What is a BIND really doing?" "How can I fiddle with the predicates to improve efficiency" "How do I read and interpret the result from an "EXPLAIN". This book did not help me with any of those questions. I've had it for almost 7 years and have only referred to it a few times.

If you have to own one DB2 book (Linux,Unix,Windows) , buy this one. Usually I end up buying 2 books. The first being a book being very visual and easy to read but lacking any real detail and practical knowledge. The second book is usually a scary developers guide which is extremely thorough but requires a PHD to read it, or you end up using it as a reference. This book hits dead on!! Incredibly easy to read with examples and visuals that make understanding difficult concepts easy, but its encompasses every important concept in DB2 with plenty of detail. I love this book and recommend it to anyone looking for the DB2 book to buy. Of course there are times you will need to access DB2 Info Center when you need very specific detail, but this book will provide you on the right track and explain how you got there perfectly. Hats off to the authors of this one.

Good one for DB2 beginners.Makes us familiar with DB2 terminology gradually in simple terms with example usages without overloading us. Adding a foot note / in-line note mentioning counter parts of each tool/feature/concept in other popular RDBMS such as Oracle /MSSQL would have made this perfect for DBAs learning DB2 for the firsttime.Nonetheless, this is a good book to start learning DB2.I am reading this on Kindle, some diagrams are available in color for this book on IBM website. Wish Kindle version has those color diagrams instead of black & white.

The book is written not only technically right but it is good success-stories and life-examples which I enjoy to read. Gives good base knowledge and big picture is good.It covers DB2 CC tools which is deprecated. You can found official community eBooks on 10 and IBM Data Studio online. It provided by IBM and community. If you own iPad with Retina screen be prepared all pictures will look like crap. You can download hi-res from official site.

Can't wait to begin learning about db2 databases. This is the right book and the author to do it with.

Can be used as an introductory guide and later as a reference. Explanations are clear and comprehensive. The diagrams and tables are used effectively to clarify concepts. Lives up to the IBM image of high quality and depth. Can be used to prepare for DB2 certification because it covers all the concepts (at least for the first two levels, but possibly for the advanced level too). It also has self-evaluation questions at the end of each chapter. This is a must-have for a new and intermediate DB2 professional.

Not alot of DB2 books out there (unlike Oracle), but the one's I have read are either very old or geared towards mainframes. This is a well organized book. Easy to read. Lots of diagrams to aid the understanding of a specific topic. Great book if your new to v8 and have been using v7 for a couple of years. Recommended.

Beware. This is not for Mainframe.
